From several perspectives, the present volume, which contains the core proceedings and some important consequences of the Congress of the Federation of the European Sections of the Theosophical Societies (Munich, Whitsun, 1907), records a - perhaps even the - pivotal moment in the progressive manifestation of Rudolf Steiner's spiritual mission: to establish Anthroposophy as the mystery teaching of our time. In addition and more generally, the Congress and its documents mark a watershed in the emergence of Western esotericism into the outer, public sphere as a vehicle for cultural and social renewal. The volume therefore has an exoteric historical significance beyond its undoubtedly far-reaching esoteric consequences for the Anthroposophical Movement. In terms of Steiner's biography, the Congress marked the completion of the seventh year since providence (and karma) had first brought him into the Theosophical orbit in 1900. Having realized during the first half of his life the inner and outer Christiangnostic and Rosicrucian initiatory stages necessary to step onto the world stage as a teacher, Steiner recognized in the Theosophical Society the right conditions and forces for the realization of his mission. Understanding this, he strove with his entire being to realize the opportunity the moment offered. In 1902, he assumed the mantle of spiritual teacher and accepted the position of the General Secretary of the German Section. Five years of full Theosophical activity followed, during which interest and participation in the Movement expanded exponentially. ...
