Acknowledgments. I began work on this book just a little over fourteen years ago. Inevitably, that translates as a very large measure of indebtedness-and the risk of overlooking or slighting those who deserve better. They have my thanks, as well as my apologies. There are those one could never forget. That list must, for me, begin with the Clan Martinez-Manolo and Morita, and their wonderful brood, a family of incomparable warmth and affection and geniality. Inexplicably, some years ago, they opened their home and their hearts to me and made me one of them. With the passage of the years, the ties which bind me to them have grown only stronger, richer. I suppose I might have done this book without them, but I know that it would have been a lesser book, just as I would have been a lesser person had I not been privileged to call myself a Martinez-by-adoption.
